I compared the picture my Panasonic dvd player connected with component cables to the picture this sony upconvert dvd player with an hdmi cord and although my old dvd player did an ok job this one was considerably better. I recomment to everyone and anyone who has dvds and an hdtv.
If i had to be picky i could say that I bought this used and it didn't come with a remote but most people would have a universal remote, as do I, so not a real problem.

Takes a while to read a disc initially, but overall a great quality up-scaling DVD player with all the standard features and more.
Rating: - Great upscaling product and resume feature is great
I love the resolution on this player when scaling. The best part of the player though is its capability to resume where you left the dvd last.
Rating: - Not reliable, Warranty is 3 month, not 1 year. Expensive to repair
Product is not reliable. Had this unit for 4 months only and seldom used since we have several DVD players around the house. Recently every DVD movie played within the unit looked greenish. The same DVD played in other units looked normal in other DVD players in our home. It does not have full 1 year warranty as I thought it had. Rating: - Zoom icon will not go away!
When watching an anamorphic widescreen DVD, you need to use the zoom button on the remote to get the video to fill the screen. But there is a bright blue "X2" magnifying glass icon on the top right of the screen that will not go away. It is very distracting and there is no on-screen display OFF setting. Google "dvp-ns77h zoom icon" for more on this problem and no resolution from Sony.
